And although it is obvious that a book about cancer has a tragic element, the true achievement of this book is to find a light tone within the drama as well. ![]() The comic Our Cancer Year has the same tone and is written together with his wife, Joyce Brabner, and is about the year he got diagnosed with cancer and the consecutive treatments. Especially when you combine that with Harvey’s croaky voice, which makes him the ideal tragicomic character. The contradiction between an optimistic title and his feeling of always being down on his luck and cynicism works very humorously. This together with the optimistic-sounding title American Splendor sold me. The movie was advertised to me as telling the story of a cynical grumpy man who always sees how things could go wrong but somehow tells about that in a funny way.
